Pondcypress
Taxodium ascendens

Height: 70-80'
Habit: narrowly columnar
Landscape Value:

: A handsome tree for large areas the pondcypress makes a fine specimen for parks and golf courses. It does not have sufficient hardiness to use in the same northern range as baldcypress. It does not have any serious pests or diseases. Pondcypress prefers moist acid soils, likes full sun, and can tolerate windy conditions. It is particularly useful where a narrow upright, pyramidal habit is needed. Native to the same wet swampy areas as its close relative baldcypress it can be used in the same site conditions.

Seasonal Characteristics:
  • Summer: Fine foliage, with bright-green leaves pointing upwards.

  • Fall: Deciduous conifer, foliage turns orange-brown.

  • Winter: Red-brown bark is coarsely ridged.
Points of Interest:

This tree is surrounded by some scientific controversy. Taxonomists disagree over whether pondcypress is a distinct species or a botanical variety of common baldcypress. Therefore, it is also found in literature under the name, Taxodium distichum 'Nutans'. It does not form "knees" as prominently as common baldcypress.

Native Range:

Virginia to Florida and Alabama, on more upland areas.
