new ways to engage many of today's students in the life-long process of
learning is a greater-than-ever challenge. Educators are being asked to
teach the concepts of responsibility, commitment and involvement alongside
math, science, language arts and social studies. A great idea if you have
the right tools to evaluate self-esteem and critical thinking. But how?
University of Illinois Extension can help with Leadership Development Through Community Action, a multifaceted service learning curriculum designed to address the complex learning goals of
- understanding self and one's group
- understanding one's community and the issues it faces
- researching, designing and implementing a plan to meet a goal
- evaluation of results
Lessons have been developed around the concepts of service learning and the experiential learning cycle. They build from initial modules on developing self-confidence and teamwork, to learning about all aspects of community life, to creating and implementing an action plan that meets actual community needs.
