CORN SPURRY, Spergula orvensis
L. 1, plant in bloom; 2, seeds. Annual, reproducing
by seeds. Stems erect or ascending, 6 to 18 inches (15 to 45 cm)
high, not hairy or only slightly so, slender, branching. Leaves
bright green, threadlike, 1/2 to 1 inch (1.3 to 2.5 cm) long, in whorls
around each joint of the stem. Flowers small, white, with 5 petals,
in terminal clusters. Seed pod round, breaking into 5 sections,
containing many seeds. Seeds lens-shaped, dull black with a conspicuous
white wing. Found locally in small grains and other annual crops.
